Inside Our Schools: Personal Finance Comes to Life

Starting with the 2025 fall semester, high school students in Minnesota are required to take a personal finance course to graduate. SteveLear.org was proud to be at the forefront of helping the Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) pass this important legislation in 2023. Now that the statewide rollout of this course is underway, 5 Eyewitness News reporter Brett Hoffland stopped by Eagan High School to see the course in action.

On February 20th, Hoffman’s story, A Lesson in Personal Finance, headlined KSTP-TV’s evening news as part of the station’s Inside Your Schools segment. Both staff and students gave the course a thumbs up. Teachers are surprised and happy to see the kids so engaged in learning about income planning, taxes, debt, insurance, and investing. And students confirm that the content is valuable because they can apply their new knowledge to real-life decisions about health insurance, car insurance, and student loans.

We’re excited to see the impact that this class is already having and look forward to continuing our work to financially empower Minnesota youth.
